Cast Iron Conservation
 Cowled Vent Grilles

Designs and Uses

Designed by The Cast Iron Air Brick Company and cast exclusively for us, this stunning grille was transformed from a concept to "a work of art" by our North Devon pattern maker.   The pattern was then skilfully used to create this splendid, individually cast, ventilation grille.

If ever there was a ventilation grille that was suitable for a listed building then this is it.  In fact, our customers say it's an enhancement to the exterior of their property. That's one  reason why we named it "The Conservation Vent Grille" ( it's also made entirely from 100% recycled iron).

The conservation cowled vent grille is ideally suited to bathroom, cloakroom, tumble dryer outlets and all outlets and inlets where either a  4" (100mm) ducting or 5" (125mm) ducting is used.

The white flexible ducting can be fitted on the spigot at the back of the 4" or 5" vent without any clamps, although a tie wrap or jubilee clip can be fitted if desired.

We also supply a flap valve for the 4" 100mm version which can be duct taped directly onto the back of the conservation vent to keep out any insects and prevent any backdraught. Scroll down to see how this is fitted.

We can also supply a copper flymesh cut an inch (25mm) diameter larger than the bore  to act as a flyscreen for either the 4" or 5" conservation vents. The flyscreen will need cleaning from time to time to keep the vent working correctly and it is therefore not suitable for tumble dryer outlets or combustion air supply vents.

The grille comes in two finishes, finished in a hardwearing black gloss or in a red oxide primer ready for you to apply your own finish.

Fitting a Flap valve to the
4" (100mm) Conservation Vent

Line up the flap valve with the spigot on the back of the conservation vent.

Tape the flap valve with duct tape to the spigot.

Ensure the valve is the correct way round as in picture lower  right.

Blow through the valve to check it operates correctly , set a little back from spigot if flap fouls against vent.

Fitting a Flap valve to the
5" (125mm) Conservation Vent

The 5" (125mm) flap valve cannot be taped directly to the back of the spigot
because the flap will foul against the inside of the vent.
It needs to be set back about an inch (25mm) or more to allow the flap to move.
This can be achieved using a little ingenuity by adding a short length of rigid duct
(not supplied) or connecting a length of the 5" (125mm) flexible duct
to the spigot and locating the flap valve further back.

Whatever method is used, ensure the flap valve and ducting is firmly secured
and the flap is in the upright position.
