Victorian reproduction adjustable ventilation grilles in cast iron - either open or closed, hence the name "hit and miss".  Ideally suited to replace one for one with existing grilles.

These new reproductions are supplied in bare metal, and like the originals are not suitable for painting. They should be preserved with wd40 to prevent them seizing up. To ensure they do not seize, the clearances on these grilles are loose and therefore will not completely shut off the air flow when closed , this is in keeping with the original design and is unavoidable with cast iron grilles.

These are often used for general ventilation or for open fire and inglenook fire vents. Adjustable vent grilles may not be suitable for installing in every situation and we would recommend taking some advice from a qualified plumber if they are installed where they are to provide air for a heating appliance especially gas or oil fired.
