This vented coal hole cover is an imperial coal hole size, which is 12 inches across (300mm diameter), and is supplied without a frame.

Coal hole covers either solid or vented are quite niche now and quite rare but we still cast brand new covers in this simple design and receive a steady flow of orders mainly from London, Birmingham, Manchester and major cities across UK. During Victorian times it would have been quite common to have the town foundry manufacture their own designs, many rather elaborate and containing the foundry location but sadly we aren’t able to replicate these. The castings we supply, however are most likely to match the sizes of many customers coal hole covers as 12″ is the UK standard size for a coal hole. The frame would be 1 and 1/2 inch smaller in diameter which was the perfect size to allow a sack of coal but small enough and therefore secure enough not to allow a man to gain access to the property cellar and coal store (man holes are quite different, being specifically designed to allow access for people starting at 15″ diameter).

We now find the majority of orders are for property restorers replacing defective or missing coal covers although we are seeing an increasing amount of interest in installing “dummy” covers in pavements , walkways and precincts. We do receive the majority of orders from listed London properties in conservation areas and have even supplied one for the set of BBCs Eastenders on the now very distinctive and recognised “Albert Square” aka Fassett Square.
