Scottish Highlands Restorations

Even in the Cairngorms, listed buildings require ventilating .

The future is of course to create a sealed house against the draughts but, it’s not so easy on period properties and there are hundreds of them in the highlands of Scotland.

So vents are still required and here’s an example using quite a few of the round RO9 slotted grilles used as extractor outlets.

Rather interesting though are the rising ground levels around the building caused by decades and decades of tarmacing and patio works. The GRID6 9×6 square hole air brick probably installed many years ago is now significantly obscured by the surrounding path, so much so it’s almost worth replacing with a 9×3 air brick and using a periscope to direct the air downwards. It will surely have affected the damp proof course . Also of note are the weep vents cleverly utilising the box section of the sashes to allow air from the outside into the room when the windows are shut.
