A Sustainable Future for Manufacturing

Making Plans for Water Shortages

Even in the Westcountry !

This summer, here in Devon and across the UK, we are facing an unprecedented shortage of rain. If it wasn’t for the fact, we had torrential rain everyday early spring, we’d be serious trouble. Water plays an important part in our cast iron air brick company because it is needed to water our young trees. Thankfully, at Bowhill, we aren’t on a hosepipe ban yet, but if we were, the hundreds of trees we’ve planted, and the hundreds more we have yet to plant to offset our carbon emissions would have all shrivelled up.

In order to be better prepared for 2026 and beyond, and to wean our self away from the dependency of our local water company, we’re planning ahead.

Here are a few water harvesting projects we are undertaking this summer to ready for future droughts…

  • Repairing roofs and rainwater gutters so none of the precious water drains away into the ground
  • Diverting rainwater from the workshop roof and barn roofs into water bowsers
  • Collecting 5000 litres of water in 1 tonne containers for storage and connecting up with pumps
  • Installation of pipework and hose pipes to pump water onto the newly planted and even some established trees to help absorb our CO2
