A Trip to Cotehele in Cornwall
We recently took a trip to a wonderful National Trust property near Gunnislake and were thrilled to see our cast iron vent grilles in use as extractors from the kitchen of one of the holiday cottages.
The grille in use is the heritage grille item HER7 which we must have supplied many years ago as the pattern was slightly different to the one we make today as it was improved in 2020.
We stayed in Elbow cottage that had air bricks modified with rodent mesh screwed across the fronts. It looks to work ok for rodents but wouldnt have been a deterent for the numerous wasps that were flying round the estate. All the fruit from the apple trees had fallen early due to the hot summer and was strewn around the base of the trees in the orchard. Thankfully our cottage wasn’t affected by the wasps but if they were then our FLY6 air brick would have been a much better and more attractive alternative. Signs to be wary of wasps were on every table in the cafe and a wasp nest had even been resposible for closing one of the footpaths around the garden !
One vent that looks to be a triumph though and that is a 12×12 inch louvre that the builders have created using roofing slates. In fact the mill, the blacksmiths and the wheelwrights all had displays of how ingeneuous our forefathers were and featured some very interesting displays, photos and descriptions of how everything worked a century ago . It was such a worthwhile visit and so inspiring.
Of course there was much more to see than just cast iron vent grilles and air bricks, there’s a stunning period manor house, formerly the Edgecombes residence, strewn with dozens of tapestries and a mini armoury complete with lancers spears, swords and an artificial arm wrapped in armour and a stunning garden and plenty of outbuildings . But of course, we were here to look at ventilation grilles and we weren’t dissapointed !
